Faculty Training VHS and DVD Materials

(Please refer to order form for purchasing information)

  1. THE RUNAWAY ANGEL (2009, 59 min.)

    Dr. Minuchin:

    • Depathologizes the daughter’s runaway behavior and highlights her strengths.
    • Works at developing an awareness of how the daughter’s runaway behavior is an expression of her feelings of hurt and abandonment with her mother.
    • Shows the family how they can strengthen their relationship and stay together.
    • Shows the agency how “impossible” cases can become possible with the inclusion of the family.

  2. INVITING THE FAMILY DANCE (2005)
    • A 70-minute documentary about the life and work of Salvador Minuchin, the personal and professional influences on his work and the rich variety of ways his thinking and practice have shaped the field of Family Therapy—often in ways which are often no longer recognizable as Structural Family Therapy.
    • A training film, with examples of Minuchin’s past and present clinical work.
    • Commentaries from leading systemic practitioners from the United States, Europe and China.

      Inviting the Family Dance

  3. THE CARETAKER© (1993, 34 mins.) In this DVD/VHS, Minuchin works with an urban family and its many helpers, who deal separately with physical disability, drug abuse, and foster care. He emphasizes the integration of services and explores the strengths of family members, positively framing the mother’s behavior as a concerned caretaker. (S. Minuchin)

  4. THE OEDIPAL SON© (1992, 36 mins.) Minuchin works with a family treated by Gil Tunnell, in which the young man has attempted to gouge his eyes. The symptoms have arisen and are nurtured by the over involvement of family members. The work is focused on creating a family organization that will support normal functioning. (S. Minuchin and G. Tunnell)

  5. HEARING VOICES© (1991, 49 mins.) Minuchin works with the family of a woman who has been repeatedly hospitalized for psychotic symptoms. He connects the woman’s voices with the behavior of her husband and daughter, and helps overcome the preoccupation with symptoms by directing the family attention to their relations with each other. (S. Minuchin)

  6. EMPOWERING AN “IMPOSSIBLE” BLENDED FAMILY© (1993, 53 mins) Ema Genijovich works with a blended family labeled “impossible” by helpers. The 9-year-old boy is at risk to be placed in a foster home. With a frame that highlights competence, she empowers the mother and activates unsuspected resources in the couple. (E. Genijovich)

  7. SEARCHING FOR COLORS: THE SHIT PAINTER© (1991, 90 mins.) In this year-long supervision of an experienced therapist, Minuchin’s goal is to foster a more complex use of the self. As Wai-Yung Lee works with the family of a young man who smears feces, her style centralizes the therapist and focuses on meaning. The supervision moves her to work more experientially, become less central, tolerate conflict, and highlight family interaction. (W.Y. Lee and S. Minuchin)

Please note: each training VHS/DVD material comes with a descriptive overview of the family work plus a list of questions that can be used for discussion.

Purchase Price:
